Biography

Born in Bibai, Hokkaido, the artist moved to Italy in 1970 and is now based in Pietrasanta in northern Italy and creates sculptures in marble and bronze. His works, characterized by an overwhelming sense of mass yet possessing smooth, gravity-defying forms, have captivated audiences worldwide. He has held exhibitions internationally, particularly Europe, and many of his sculptures are permanently installed as monuments in public spaces. At the Kan Yasuda Sculpture Museum Arte Piazza Bibai in his hometown, visitors can experience a unique environment in which magnificent nature, time, and sculpture exist in harmony. His numerous awards include the International Award for Sculpture (1994), the Order of the Star of the Italian Solidarity (2008), and the Isamu Noguchi Award (2025). He is regarded as one of Japan’s leading sculptors on the global stage.
