Carsten Höller, born in 1961 in Brussels to German parents, uses his training as a scientist in his work as an artist, concentrating particularly on the nature of human relationships. Doubt and uncertainty are recurring themes in his work, often expressed through investigational situations, participatory sculptures, and influential environments, prompting viewers to question how they see and understand the world around them.

Höller’s works have been shown internationally over the last two decades, with major installations and solo exhibitions including Test Site at Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall, London (2006); Soma at Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin (2010); Doubt, at Pirelli HangarBicocca, Milan (2016); Experience at New Museum, New York (2011); Decision at Hayward Gallery in London (2015); SUNDAY at Museo Tamayo, Mexico City (2019); DAY at MAAT, Lisbon (2021). In 2022, he opened Brutalisten, a brutalist restaurant with a minimal amount of ingredients per dish, in Stockholm.

His works are included in collections around the world, such as Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, France; Luma Foundation, Arles, France; Fondazione Prada, Milan, Italy; The 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, Japan; Toyota Municipal Museum of Art, Toyota, Japan; Moderna Museet, Stockholm, Sweden; Tate, London, United Kingdom; and at Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York, United States.
